4.2 million EVs sold in the first half of 2022 worldwide, China leading

According to a new report, 4.2 million electric cars were sold worldwide in the first half of this year, a growth of 63% compared to the same period last year. China alone saw sales of 2.4 million EVs, or 26% of all vehicles delivered in the country, compared to just 10% in the first half of 2021, according to with new research from Canalys.

EVs include electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). “EV sales in China will more than double in the first half of 2022 and this country is now the largest EV market. Fifty-seven percent of global EV sales in found in mainland China. With 118% annual growth, it is the fastest growing market,” said Jason Low, principal analyst at Canalys.

“With current and strong consumer demand, EV sales are expected to exceed 5 million by the end of 2022 in the country,” said Low. EV demand continues to grow in 2022, with several new EV models launched this year.

The rise in fuel prices has increased demand and the government is helping consumers. But delivery continues to be limited and lead times of months are still common, the report said. While 1.1 million EVs were delivered to customers in Europe, 414,000 EVs were delivered to US customers in the first half of 2022.

Tesla was the third largest car maker in China in the first half of this year. It offers 200,000 cars to its customers now. More than 413,000 EVs were sold in the United States in the first half of 2022, including more than 64,000 electric vehicles. “Despite improvements in the range of cars and EVs from more brands, Tesla will account for about 60% of US sales in the first half of 2022,” said Chris Jones , VP, and chief analyst.

Tesla is the leader in the BEV segment, thanks to the excellent performance of its Model Y and its Model 3 that allowed it to sell 565,000 vehicles in the first half of 2022, giving it market share of 14%.
