After two years, under the cover of health crisis, thousands of tourists are expected for this olfactory weekend!

For four generations, Carole Biancalana and her family have been cultivating jasmine. 100 years of history in total. “An incomparable fragrance, a blend of banana, pear, peach and almond”, list the horticulturist. It’s a unique, highly sought-after product.

Every year, this country produces tons of jasmine, which is kept for the house Dior. Some of his famous signatures are made from the white flower of Grasse, such as Wild water a I like !

Harvested from August to October, Jasmine loves it. Harvesting is done at dawn, before the sun gets too hot and burns the material. “She’s a real princess! She’s not a flower, but THE flower”, Carole enjoyed. This beauty can not be preserved, so as not to oxidize. During the season, it’s really important work, and then it’s put into place.

Worldwide, there are more than 200 different types of jasmine.

Between the sea and the mountains, this flower blooms in the clay soil of the Grasse region. The relative cold of winter makes the feet rest. But it needs sun and lots of water to grow. Heat waves and droughts therefore represent a real risk for the future. “We know, it’s really hard”explained Carole.

Some systems are considered in its field, such as storing rainwater for winter in summer.

Paradoxically, when the flower is under water stress, it becomes very fragrant.

This means fighting for its existence yet it remains ephemeral. Flower is a natural defense. With this year’s temperatures, the spices from the plantations are at their best.

How did this jasmine come to the mountains of northwest India? In ancient times, its acclimatization area was extended to the eastern part of the Mediterranean, namely in Egypt, where it became a source of wealth for the Greeks and Romans. It was not until the Renaissance that it was established in France.

Even before the success of the perfume, jasmine bouquets met with great success!

Since the 16th century, jasmine has been a favorite among artisans. Its aromas are highly appreciated by perfumers who add its essence to many perfumes.

Due to the beautiful flower, the shape of the jasmine has been brought to the cold, thanks to animal fat (the so-called enfleurage technique):

“In some factories, we change between 1000 and 1500 chassis per day”, adds Laurent Pouppeville. A few centuries later, the jasmine, like the orange blossom or the rose, became one of the symbols of Grasse.

Although the vegetation of the Grasse basin gradually decreased in the second half of the 20th century, with the expansion of the world, the land is still productive, chosen for noble houses.

Don’t forget to celebrate its flower every year!
